Letter from the President

April 6, 2018

Dear Mount Ida Community:

Over the last six years, I’ve been proud to witness Mount Ida grow and thrive. However, the financial pressure on small colleges has never been greater and our limited resources obligate us to consider what is best for our students and community. The agreement that the Board of Trustees has reached with UMass represents the culmination of a thoughtful process of consideration of what was in the best interest of our students. Throughout this time, our students have remained the top priority.

While imminent change of this magnitude may be disruptive and difficult to process, I hope that you will ultimately join me in looking forward to a bright academic future for our students under UMass’ resources. I sincerely believe that the months and years to come will present our students with enhanced academic opportunities and educational value.

I know that no institution can replace Mount Ida or the campus and culture we have built together. However, we would not have entered into this agreement if we did not believe that UMass would preserve Mount Ida’s character and serve as a custodian of its proud history and legacy.

UMass Dartmouth has committed its many resources to ensuring that the transition of our students will be as seamless as possible. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be working with UMass representatives to thoroughly communicate all changes to our community.

I want to take a moment to recognize the dedication of all our staff and faculty who have made up the fiber of our community over many academic years. I want to sincerely thank them for their tremendous service.

Our priority is to offer our support and compassion at this time, and we are proud to be standing unified with UMass in these efforts.
