From Potential to Achievement

Bereavement Studies

NEI is one of the few programs to offer you a bachelor degree in bereavement studies. Our Bereavement Studies program is designed for those who are interested in specializing in the behavioral sciences with a focus on death and grief.

The first two years of the program incorporate coursework from human services, liberal arts and social sciences. Candidates with an educational background in fields such as nursing may apply as transfer students. In the last two years, the curriculum includes a core of bereavement and psychology courses to broaden your knowledge of and sensitivity to important emotional, ethical and medical/legal issues.

Courses combined with hands on practical training will give you a solid theoretical framework for understanding the grief process, the factors that influence it, and the intervention strategies that aid those grieving.

Graduates with a bachelor degree in bereavement studies are prepared for work in hospice settings and in funeral homes as bereavement facilitators, as well as in a variety of community-based programs. They are also qualified for advanced studies with specializations in counseling, mental health, human services and grief therapy.

Bereavement Studies is not accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE), and does not lead to funeral service licensure. If you are interested in funeral service licensure, see Bereavement Studies for Funeral Service, Funeral Home Management, or Funeral Service majors.
