Mount Ida College

From Potential to Achievement

Dental Hygiene

Dental hygienists are licensed oral health professionals who focus on preventing and treating oral diseases in order to protect the oral cavity, and also to protect the patients' total health. They are graduates of accredited dental hygiene education programs in colleges and universities, and must pass a written national board examination and a clinical examination to obtain state licensure (American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA).

In recent years the advances in evidence-based scientific research and the ever changing healthcare system have allowed growth for the scope of practice for the dental hygienist. With this growth, several roles for dental hygienists have been identified. These roles include clinician, educator, researcher, administrator/manager and advocate. All these roles of the dental hygienist are interrelated within the context of improving the public’s health by promoting oral health.

Mount Ida College offers three dental hygiene programs:

Associate of Arts in Dental Hygiene

Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene

Bachelor Degree Completion Program

To learn more about any of these programs and application requirements, contact the admissions office at admissions@mountida.edu or call 617-928-4553.

The student:faculty ratio in the clinic is 4:1.

As with most health care professions, the outlook for careers in the dental hygiene field is excellent. Traditional work sites include dental offices that practice general dentistry, as well as those that specialize in pedodontics (dentistry for children) and periodontics (treatment of gum disease). Public health programs, school systems, hospitals, the armed forces, research institutions and manufacturers of dental products also offer job opportunities for dental hygienists.
