Mount Ida College

From Potential to Achievement

Longfellow Preschool at a Glance

Convenient Location
Longfellow Preschool is located on Mount Ida College's beautiful, self-enclosed 72-acre campus in Newton, Massachusetts, just eight miles from Boston.  Our building overlooks the College's athletic fields with easy access to the College's other facilities.

Enrollment
We have a multi-age group model for 32 children ages 2.9 to 5 years old.  In 1998, we also introduced a transitional kindergarten program called Longfellow 3.  Children attending Longfellow typically come from the neighboring community as well as from the Mount Ida community, which includes faculty, staff, and full-time students in need of a preschool for their children.

Calendar
Longfellow follows the academic calendar of Mount Ida College, including semester breaks, beginning in September and continuing through mid-June.

Well-Trained and Caring Teachers
Head Teachers, many with long tenures, hold bachelor or master degrees in education or a related field, and serve as mentors to undergraduate student interns enrolled in the College's Child Development/Teacher Education Program.  All teachers at Longfellow have completed Red Cross First Aid Training and CPR for young children.

Excellent Teacher to Student Ratio
Longfellow has an excellent student to teacher ratio of 6:1, ensuring children get personal attention and support.

A Laboratory Preschool for Mount Ida College
As a laboratory school, designed to train future teachers enrolled in Mount Ida's Child Development/Teacher Education Program, the learning opportunities for both preschoolers and teachers-in-training create a rich and fertile environment for collective growth.

Long History of Success
The Longfellow Preschool at Mount Ida College was established in 1969.

Worlds to Discover

Here at Longfellow Preschool, we foster the development of positive self-esteem, pro-social behavior, and respect for others.  The developmental curriculum encourages curiosity and discovery, while enhancing each child’s creative abilities and cognitive needs.   Our teaching practices acknowledge that every child has potential, which can be enhanced through developmentally appropriate curriculum and program planning.

Upon entering Longfellow, children and their families discover that the cozy quarters in which the preschool is situated provides a portal to the rich, varied, and stimulating environment of Mount Ida College.  We enjoy the opportunity to connect with the College community as a whole.

Longfellow children go on regular “mini walking field trips” to visit the library, the animals at the Center for Veterinary Technology and Science, or to the gymnasium where they participate in the specially designed Movement Education class.  They also visit the School of Design, where their artwork is displayed during our Annual Children’s Art Show.  Special activities and events are part of our program planning.  These include environmental science programs, puppet shows, and family breakfasts.
