About:
Professor Garcia-Rios brings both teaching and academic
administration experience to the Biology Program. He has taught Chemistry at Stonehill
College, and Biology and Chemistry at Texas A&M International University, and
worked earlier as an instructor and graduate teaching assistant at Purdue University.
Garcia-Rios has designed and implemented courses such as
Recombinant DNA and Genetic Engineering, Food Chemistry, and Molecular Systems Biology.
He also has served as the director of the NIH-National Institute of General Medical
Sciences summer research internship program at Texas A&M International and Laredo
Community College, and as the director of the joint admission medical program and the
early medical school acceptance program at Texas A&M in Laredo. The recipient of
numerous grants and awards, Garcia-Rios was the Scholar of the
Year for the College of Science and Technology at Texas A&M and was named a Texas
Education Agency Faculty Fellow. Mario has a Ph.D. in Biochemical Genetics
from Purdue University and a B.Sc (Hons). in Biochemical Engineering from the Instituto
Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Mexico.
