Veterinary Technician Continuing Education Symposium

Mount Ida College’s Veterinary Technician Continuing Education Symposium provides an outstanding educational experience for veterinary technicians and other veterinary professionals. You will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of veterinary technology and your colleagues during interactive presentations and hands-on laboratory sessions at the state-of-the-art Center for Veterinary Technology and Science at Mount Ida College.

You may register for a full-day session (which includes two lectures and two hands-on laboratory sessions) or a half-day session (which includes two lectures). The symposium takes place on the campus of Mount Ida College, 777 Dedham Street, Newton, MA.

Program

Advanced Anesthesia Skills
Speaker: Sandra Robbins, BS, CVT, VTS(anes),
Tufts Cummins School of Veterinary Medicine

Proper administration of anesthesia is crucial whether a dog or cat seen for a routine procedure or is brought in for a critical care situation. This lecture will cover the importance of anesthetic protocols and making education decisions as a veterinary anesthetist. The session will also focus on the role of proper monitoring throughout procedures that require anesthesia.

The Technician’s Role in Clinical Pathology

This lecture will focus on the technician’s role in performing clinical pathology skills in the laboratory setting. Hematology and urinalysis applications will be discussed and attendees will learn a process by which all the major aspects of the urinalysis, complete blood count and differential are identified and commented upon. Hematology aspects will include platelets, erythrocytes, leukocytes and common abnormalities.Urinalysis aspects will include chemical testing, specific gravity, casts, crystals, proteins, fats, sperm, protein, bacteria, leukocytes and varioius types of epithelial cells.  A comprehensive review of both hematology and urinalysis from collection and sample storage to the reporting of finding, will be discussed.

Wet Laboratory: Anesthesia
This wet laboratory will focus on anesthetic equipment including anesthesia machine and monitoring equipment. The set up and care of equipment as well as application and settings utilized during veterinary procedures will be demonstrated.

Wet Laboratory: Clinical Pathology
This hands on opportunity will cover both chemical and microscopic examination of blood and urine samples. Participants will learn means by which they may standardize methods in their own clinical labs. Microscopy and good lab practice techniques in diagnostics and reporting will be emphasized.

Registration Fees
Half-Day Program (9:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.): $35.00
The half-day program includes two lectures.

Full-Day Program (9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.): $85.00 (limited to 50 participants)
The full-day program includes two lectures and two hands-on laboratory sessions. Lunch is also provided.

Registration Deadline
The deadline for registration is September 9, 2010.

Continuing Education Credits
Half-day program attendees will receive three (3) continuing education credits.
Full-day program attendees will receive seven (7) continuing education credits.
