Honor Scholars Program a Success, Thanks to Generosity of Friends, Alumni and Parents

Friends, parents and alumni give back to Mount Ida in many ways, including financial support of initiatives and programs. A gift that continues to benefit our students came from the College’s good friends, Trustee Emeritus David Z. Webster and his wife Janie Webster. In 2008, this couple, who values the pursuit of intellectual curiosity in their own family, generously supported one of our most dynamic academic opportunities for highly motivated students—the Honor Scholars program.

As Honor Scholars, students  pursue independent and interdisciplinary study with the guidance of a faculty mentor. As a result of students’ intellectual curiosity and faculty support, innovative research, ideas, and projects emerge and grow.

Take Lindsay Dustin ’14, a Vet Tech major and Honor Scholar, for example. She is launching a new interdisciplinary course called “Veterinary Forensics” in the fall 2013. With the support of Professor Sarah Lefebvre and Forensic Science Program Director Jim Jabbour, Dustin’s class combines her passion around the issue of animal abuse and neglect with veterinary technology.

Thanks to the generosity of the Webster’s and other donors, students receive the professional preparation they need to achieve real-world success. In the future, Dustin can show potential employers her accomplishments as an Honor Scholar since her pilot course has the potential to be offered permanently.
