Students, faculty and staff admire the School of Design Faculty's artwork at The Gallery's Ooh, Cool, Ahh! Exhibition.
The Ooh, Cool, Ahh! Exhibition opening reception at The Gallery on September 19 featured 16 School of Design Faculty and their diverse span of art, mediums, themes, and moods. At this biennial event, faculty—comprised of working artists, creative directors, graphic designers, editors, interior designers, and illustrators—shared their individual perspectives on explorative themes, such as global warming, feminism, and transcendentalism.
Creative Composition of Ooh, Cool, Ahh!
Adorning the walls of The Gallery, located in Carlson Hall, faculty’s eclectic artwork transformed the white room into an expressive and colorful canvas. From hand sewn patterns, digital print, acrylic paint, and many more artistic avenues, attendees were in awe of the creative composition of this September’s exhibit. Students, faculty, and staff, even had the chance to ask questions directly to the School of Design faculty about their pieces during The Gallery Talk.
Revealing Artists' Muses
Cheryl Hirshman, Visiting Professor of Art Foundation, turned her interest in the craft of knitting and feminist tradition into an art exhibit called “Voices of Yarn: Stitch and Time.” For ten months, she set up spontaneous knitting circles in the Greater Boston area, learning about the act of repetition and how small details gradually build into something larger.
“I see this as synonymous with the development of Women’s Movements of the past century, with knitting acting as an umbilical cord nurturing the evolution of women’s consciousness,” said Hirschman. “Apart from the knitting sessions, I wanted to create a meditative piece reminiscent of the feelings and memories one has when wearing something handmade with love.”
