New Retention Program Gives Former Students a Second Chance to Earn Their College Degree

Last fall, The Learning Circle program at Mount Ida College introduced “You’re Almost There,” a new retention program. As its name suggests, You’re Almost There, gives former students who left Mount Ida for personal or professional reasons a second chance to return to college, tuition-free, and take the last few classes they need to graduate.
Peter Sherman, Director of The Learning Circle, a federally funded TRiO program dedicated to ensuring students’ academic success stated, “You’re Almost There is a great opportunity for our students who are just a few courses away from obtaining a bachelor degree. The response from our students has been promising.”
Reaching Out to Former Students
When the program launched, in the 2011-2012 academic year, Sherman contacted former students who were close to obtaining their degrees. He reached out to these individuals by phone, email, letters, and social media, including Facebook. Qualifying students were invited back to complete their remaining graduation requirements.
“Eligibility for the You’re Almost There Program is dependent on several factors,” Sherman explains. “For instance, a student must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, have been out of college for three or more consecutive semesters, and have seven or fewer credits left to graduate.”
Getting There and Moving Forward
Mio Pichardo, one of three students to successfully graduate thanks to the You’re Almost There Program, received her degree in January 2012. She, like many students, had to leave Mount Ida as a result of financial troubles. Upon talking with Sherman, Pichardo realized that she only needed one course in order to graduate from the Graphic Design program. Having been almost two years out of school, Pichardo knew it was time to make the transition back into scholarly life.
“Before Mount Ida College invited me to the You’re Almost There Program, I was struggling financially and in the job market,” stated Pichardo. “Once I started the program, however, I learned hard work does pay off and I now have a job in my field as a Customer Service Representative and Graphic Designer at the Legacy Place Mall. Not having my degree was a worry that I thought about every day.”
