The Gallery at Mount Ida College Presents the Art of Walter Kopec

Experience the Art of Walter Kopec at The Gallery at Mount Ida College
The Gallery at Mount Ida College is pleased to present the art of Walter Kopec in the exhibit “You Just Can’t Make This Stuff Up”. The art of Walter Kopec is a playful whimsy of form, text and language. Kopec has strong graphic interest which propels these conceptual works as he combines the process of splitting and manipulating type with flat and sculptural forms. These intriguing works comment on society, politics and culture.
More About Kopec at The Gallery
Kopec is by training, as well as profession, a graphic designer. Much of his art can be seen as an offshoot of the concerns, considerations and the processes of that life. His work in general plays with the meaning of words. His visual poems or jokes are as fascinating as they are curious. This minimal exhibition has twenty three works that evoke thought through visual texture, color and form. The works compel the viewer to engage, possibly to touch the work not believing what is before them, but please do not touch.
When first entering the gallery the ideas of Pop art and Minimalism come to mind. The most intriguing aspect of Kopec’s work, beside the word play, is his use of materials. The choice of materials sometimes propel the idea as seen in the work titled All That I Have to Offer (Resume), 2010. On close observation we think maybe this is made of hot dogs or sausages or in Walter’s words the word Me’ll is hung on the wall made of strung out varnished beef by products and filler on wire. There are forms of brail, a wishbone with a crutch, Marshmallow Fluff, a plastic world globe is the artist’s statement, and a mirror with cut words that read You Can’t Always Get What You Want: Need/Want (Want), 2011 which reflects the viewer’s image. One piece evokes what is only skin deep with fake leather and dollar bills cut to reveal the word Beauty.
Free and Open to the Public
Kopec’s exhibit is from October 25 to December 4, 2011 at The Gallery, located at Mount Ida College at Carlson Hall. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
The Gallery is hosting a special reception for the artist on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 8:00pm.
