Local Anesthesia Training for Dental Hygienists

The Dental Hygiene Program at Mount Ida College is providing training to prepare registered dental hygienists for certification in local anesthesia administration. Our program is accredited by the American Dental Association Council on Accreditation.

Please be advised that session assignments may have to be modified based on enrollment.

Course hours: 20 hours didactic, 16 hours hands-on clinical

Tuition: $1,300.00  Parking and lunch are included each day. Students must successfully complete the program within the prescribed timeframe.  Any remedial work due to a missed class will be done at additional expense to the student.

Refund Policy: Participants may receive a partial refund for withdrawal prior to the start of the course.  Participants withdrawing within two weeks of the first class meeting will have a withdrawal penalty of $500.

Mount Ida College is an approved Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development provider for this program. The Workforce Development program provides up to 50% of training costs to employers to upgrade the skills of their employees.  Please note that it takes 6 to 8 weeks to process the application for this workforce develoment program.  For further information on this development program go to the Express Program at the above web site or call the Workforce Development Office at 617/626-5190.

Other materials: Participants are required to provide suitable clinical attire, safety glasses, and dental syringes. Syringes may be purchased from MIC Dental Center if necessary.

Pre-requisites: RDH degree, licensure in good standing from appropriate jurisdiction,  CPR certification preferred.  Note: a copy of current license must be presented at the first class Note: Participants are required to sit as a patient for another participant to practice injection techniques. Those medically unable to receive local anesthetic injections must provide a volunteer for the two clinical days of the course.

Goals and Objectives:

• This course has been designed to provide the participants with the didactic and clinical continuing education experience to be eligible to apply for board examination and licensure to administer local dental anesthesia in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

• The course consists of an online pre-course, two days of didactic presentations at Mount Ida College, and two days of hands-on clinical training and practice in the clinic of the Mount Ida College Dental Center.

• Subjects covered will include: Patient assessment, appropriate anatomy and physiology, pharmacology of local anesthetics and adjunctive medications, indications and contraindications, drug selection, emergency prevention and management, local anesthesia armamentarium, regulatory issues, record keeping, and small-group clinical instruction and individual clinical experience.

• The online and didactic portions will each culminate in a mock written examination; the clinical session will require a demonstration of competence as determined by the certified faculty of the Mt. Ida College Dental Hygiene Program.

• Upon completion of both the clinical and didactic training, participants will receive 52 CE units.

Provisions for taking the on-line course:

• Participants must be registered and paid-in-full to obtain online access to the Mount Ida College ANGEL site.

• Participants are strongly encouraged to read and digest the assignments of this course.

• Reintroduce participants to pertinent materials covered during their professional training.

• The on-line component of the course must be completed, including quizzes, prior to beginning the on-site component of the course.

• On-line quizzes will be timed but may be retaken until a score of 100% is achieved.

• On-line quizzes will not be available after the date the on-site course commences.

• If a participant successfully completes the on-line component but withdraws prior to taking the on-site component, 4CEU’s will be awarded.

• Any course refunds subsequent to such withdrawal are subject to the refund policies of Mount Ida College Continuing Education Department: if the participant wishes the 4-hour CEU credit for the online portion, $150.00 will be retained as a course fee; refunds will not be made later than 14 days prior to the first onsite date of the course; if the class is fully subscribed and a withdrawing participant can be replaced up to three working days prior to the first on-site course day, individual consideration for refunds will be made by the MIC Continuing Education Department.

• Individual consideration will be given to participants who are unable to access on-line material; no such individual consideration shall waive the requirement that pre-course quizzes be completed prior to on-site course

• Participants being granted the above mentioned individual consideration must certify possession of the required text
