Student Telephone FAQ

  1. Do I need to call the phone company to get phone service in my residence hall room? No. The college provides students with phone service in each residence hall room, which includes unlimited free local (area code 617) voice phone calls.
  2. What kind of phone equipment do I need? The only items you need to provide is a "no frills" touch tone phone with a phone cord, which will plug into a standard RJ-11 phone jack. Since roommates will share phone jacks it is not necessary for each student to provide a phone, so you should coordinate with your roommates to see if someone can provide a phone. We recommend that students DO NOT use cordless phones in the Residence hall rooms. While they may work for you, the high density of them in the buildings has in the past led to issues such as many phones chirping or having conversations cut out when another cordless phone is being called or used. This can lead to nuisance issues such as your phone ringing at 4:00 in the morning because someone in a nearby room is being called.
  3. Okay, I’ve got my phone plugged in and it’s still not working (there is no dial-tone). What do I do? First, check to see that the phone is plugged into a phone jack and not a network jack (see below). If that does not help, use another phone plugged into the phone jack in question to see if the problem is the phone or the jack. If it turns out that the issue is with the phone jack, contact Network Services at x4702 or nshelpdesk@mountida.edu and place a request that the jack be checked and repaired if needed.
  4. How can I be sure that the jack I’m trying to plug my phone wire into is a phone jack and not a network jack? The phone jack is narrower than a network jack and has four small metal wires in it. The network jack is wider than a phone jack, has eight small metal wires in it, and is on a wall plate that is shared with your cable TV connection (a round, threaded coaxial connector.)
  5. Okay, I know my phone extension, what is my phone number? All Resident phones are in the 617 area code and in the 243 exchange. Therefore, your phone number is 617-243-xxxx (where xxxx is your extension.)
  6. I know the extension of a faculty or administrative office, but can’t call it from off campus or a cell phone… Why not? The Faculty and Administrative office phone numbers are in a different exchange (928) than the residence hall (243) phone numbers. (All student phone numbers are in the form 1-617-243-xxxx and the Faculty and Administrative phone numbers are in the form 1-617-928-xxxx.)
  7. When I try to dial local off-campus numbers I get a fast-busy signal. What’s up? You need to dial a 9 first before dialing the local (area code 617) phone number.
  8. When I try to dial long distance numbers (outside of area code 617) I get a fast-busy signal. Why? You need to dial an 8 first before dialing a long distance phone number. You will be prompted for your RCN long distance PAC code.
  9. How do I sign up for long distance service? Contact RCN’s customer service group at 877-726-7000
  10. I can call out from my phone, but when people call me, my phone does not ring. Why not? First, check to be sure that the ringer on your phone is working (some phones have a ‘Ring On/Off’ switch). If that is not the issue, check you phone in another jack in someone else’s room. i.e. Plug your phone into their jack and have a third party call the line from another room.
  11. How can I find out what my phone extension is? Pick up you phone and dial ־”. The operator will be able to tell you your extension.
  12. Who do I call with questions about my RCN long distance service or bill? Contact RCN’s customer service group at 877-726-7000
  13. I am getting harassing calls on my telephone. What Can I do? Call the Public Safety Office at x4777. Also speak to your RA and RD.
  14. My question is not answered by any of the above… Who do I call? Contact Network Services at x4702 or via e-mail at nshelpdesk@mountida.edu or you can speak to your RA or RD.
