Services for Students

HIGH SPEED INTERNET

Mount Ida has continued to expand the technology available to students by installing a state-of-the-art switched ethernet network in all of the residence halls. There is a port for each resident student in each room. (i.e. if the room is a double, there are two jacks, in a triple - three jacks.) There is no additional charge to the student for the use of the network connections in the residence hall rooms. The connection is separate from the telephone connection and therefore does not interfere with the use of the phone line coming into the student room. The residence hall connections provide unlimited, direct, high-speed access to the Internet from the student’s computer and is much faster than a dial-up connection. Internet access is also available in a variety of computer labs, one of which is located in the center of the residence hall complex. To be able to connect to the network in the residence halls, students should have an "Ethernet ready" computer. At a minimum, you are going to want a Pentium-III class system with a minimum of 64 megabytes of RAM. Students buying new systems between now and next fall should make sure they come with an Ethernet card installed. Workshops will be held at the beginning of each semester to assist students who need assistance in installing network cards. If your computer does not have an Ethernet card, one can be purchased from most computer retailers or office supply stores. We recommend that all residence hall students have anti-virus software and physical security devices for the computer. You should also verify that your computer is covered by your homeowners/renters insurance policy.

PHONE SERVICE

Phone service is installed in each residence hall room with unlimited local (area code 617) voice calling at no cost to the residents. Voicemail service is provided for all residents at no additional charge as well. Long Distance accounts are available for students from RCN at a discounted rate. This service is not required and the resident student is welcome to use calling cards from any provider.

If you are having trouble with Phone Service in your Residence Hall Room, please refer to the Telephone FAQ.

SUPPORT POLICY FOR RES HALL NETWORK USERS

Mount Ida’s Network Services Department will provide support and assistance to students in installing and configuring their Network Interface Card so that it can communicate with the College Data Network. This activity will take place at the beginning of each semester through a series of “hands on workshops” which will be held in Shall Hall.  Network Services does not install or sell NIC cards or network cables.

Mount Ida’s Network Services Department will be unable to provide support for hardware or software problems related to your computer and other peripheral equipment. If there is a problem with the network jack in your room, the Network Services Department will investigate the issue. If there is damage to the network jack or the cabling in the wall, the College may bill back to the student(s) of the room the cost of repairing/replacing the jack.

All students who utilize campus-e-mail, College computers or the College's network agree to abide by the College's Network Use Policy.
