From Potential to Achievement

Human Services News

This semester students in HS101 Introduction to Human Services have been involved in service learning at South End House. Each week the students spend three hours working in the after-school program, involving the children in activities, serving snacks, and helping with homework. Students report enjoying this project very much, saying that they find the children to be very bright and interesting and that this work is building their confidence in their ability to help people and also teaching them patience.

This service learning is part of the overall emphasis in the Human Services program on hands-on experience and continues with the sophomore-level practicum and the eighteen-hour-per-week senior internship. Next semester students in HS 207 Practicum I will be working six hours per week at the following agencies: South End House, Rogerson Senior Services, St. Francis House, and the Charles River Center.
