Professor Steinberg wears two hats, one as an ESL instructor – the other as an English professor. “I enjoy the juxtaposition of the two, watching my ESL students progress and succeed at Mount Ida while, at the same time, having the opportunity to teach all Mount Ida students, tailoring the variety of courses I offer to meet their professional and academic needs.”
Having lived in the Middle East for five years, becoming fluent in a second language, Professor Steinberg brings sensitivity into the classroom for second language learners. “My patience in having taught ESL for many years translates into my being an empathic teacher in the various courses I teach. My interactive teaching style encourages participation from all students of varying abilities.”
As the United States, and Boston, in particular, witness an influx of international students, the time is ripe, she believes, to undertake ESL as a profession. “There are opportunities at all levels, from elementary school, to college, to adult and workplace learners. I encourage college graduates to teach abroad for a few years first in order to ascertain that this career path is appropriate and as rewarding as I have found it.”
Professor Steinberg is committed to teaching. “I find the opportunity to ignite a passion for learning and accomplishment most rewarding, be it the appreciation and enjoyment of an essay, short story, or poem as well as a student’s realization he or she has the ability to craft a thoughtful, original, engaging, and persuasive piece of work.”
Among her career highlights, Professor Steinberg cites receiving the Ronald J. Lettieri Award for Excellence in Teaching, being an invited speaker at the Japanese English Teachers’ Association Conference, presenting at eight TESOL (International ESL Organization) Conferences, speaking at the Israeli English Teachers’ Association Conference, and serving as the past president of MATSOL, the Massachusetts 800-memeber ESL Organization
Professor Steinberg’s recent publications include Independent TOEFL Essay Strategies: Key Words for the TOEIC Test, Practice Test Pack for the TOEFL Test, Perfect Phrases for the TOEFL Speaking and Writing Sections, McGraw-Hill’s Conquering the TOEFL Listening Section for Your iPod, Global Links: English for International Business (tests and computer material.
She holds Massachusetts certification in English, as a School Psychologist, Adult Basic Education and is a member of TESOL and is President of the Mount Ida chapter or Phi Beta Delta, the International Honor Society.
