Professor Fitts has more than three decades of experience in both online and offline design and in the advertising industry. His clients range from startup software firms to Fortune 100 companies, and he has served, variously, as an advertising and website creative director, a fine arts photography teacher, a curator, and a photographer.
“I truly appreciate the field of graphic design. You have to embrace the variety of experiences that it offers you and it’s an especially great field if you are a fan of contemporary culture, including magazines, book, web and social media sites, and print and television advertising.”
Fitts finds the most exciting aspect of the industry today is what drove him to it. “It’s the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects for a wide array of clients. As a teacher I want to do for my students what my instructors did for me; to help an emerging designer find the direction that suits him or her best.
He teaches Design Solutions, typography courses and Introduction to Web Design. He is an avid collector of photography with a focus on 20th century and contemporary American photography. His personal fine arts photography blog had more than a half-million hits in 2014.
Professor Fitts is the recipient of numerous regional and national advertising awards including ones from the Clios, One Show, CA Magazine, ADDY, the New York Art Directors Club, Hatch awards, Pele, the Creative Club of Boston and PDN’s Best Photo Books of 2013. His work has been featured in magazines including Communications Arts and Print. He has also been honored with the William Gunn Humanitarian Award and the Morton Godine Medal, bestowed by the Massachusetts College of Art for professional and personal dedication to the advancement of arts and culture in society.
