GENERAL INFORMATION . . .

The pre-school program, designed for 3-5 year olds, operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. until 11:45 A.M., with extended days offered Monday through Thursday until 3:00 PM. The preschool follows the academic calendar of the college, including semester breaks. Our pre-school begins in September and continues through mid-June.

A transitional kindergarten program, Longfellow 3, was introduced into the program in 1998. The Longfellow transition program makes effective and supportive use of the previous experiences of the first two years of pre-school and builds on the individual child's preparation and readiness for the ongoing years. Children attend the morning program with the addition of 2 afternoons until 3:00 PM., specifically designed for the transitional group.

One of the special features of the program is our movement education class for young children. A member of our faculty, who is trained in early childhood and physical education, leads this class. Children meet at the college gym once a week with classroom teachers for activities in motor development and physical education.Families participate in the life of the school. A Parent Planning Committee meets during the year to plan activities for members of the Longfellow community, as well as outreach programs and/or projects supporting children's needs.

Parent conferences are held twice during the year. In addition, parents receive ongoing information through newsletters, curriculum reports, phone conversations and parent education meetings.

Special activities and events are a part of our program planning. This includes visits from the

Pumpernickle Puppets, Drumlin Farm/Audubon Ark Traveling Program and Paul's Pony Rides. An annual children's art exhibit by Longfellow children is presented each year at Mount Ida's Chamberlayne School of Design gallery.
