Reporting criminal activity is a critical component of ensuring the safety and security of the Mount Ida campus. If you are the victim of a crime or witness a criminal act, please report the incident immediately to Public Safety. Call the 24-hour dispatch line at (617) 928-4777; an officer will be there to take your call. Or you can email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Reporting a Sexual Assault
Mount Ida College strives to provide you an environment that is free from violent acts and sexual misconduct. These include domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. Violations of the college’s sexual assault policy will result in disciplinary action, which may include removal from the college, prosecution in state courts and expulsion from Mount Ida College, even for a first offense. The following is a summary of the College’s process and more detailed information can be found in the Mount Ida Student Handbook.
If you are the victim of a sexual assault at the college, your first priority is to get to a place of safety. You may request transportation to a hospital with a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program. There are also nearby area rape crisis centers, including the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center’s 24-hour hotline at (800) 841-8371 and they provide a complete list of hospitals on their website. The SANE program is a state funded effort, and there could be changes in services. It is highly recommended that you look at the current list of hospitals before going for assistance. You have the option to, or not to, notify and seek assistance from law enforcement and campus authorities. You can reach out to a member of our Counseling staff who are on duty throughout the academic year, and can be contacted by visiting the Counseling Center at Appleton House during the business day, or by calling the Department of Public Safety after business hours at (617) 928-4777. The Counseling Center will provide you with the appropriate level of support and necessary referrals. The Student Handbook will give you more details on official reporting, including how to file a sexual misconduct report. When you contact Public Safety as a sexual assault victim, our staff will notify the appropriate investigatory agency. The Newton Police Department is the primary investigatory agency for this type of crime in the city of Newton. Public Safety will also notify the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Title IX Administrator, who is our Director of Human Resources. If you are the victim, your identity will be kept confidential from the staff members, unless you request that your identity be shared. The purpose of this notification is to ensure that the college not only provides the appropriate support to you, the victim of the sexual assault, but also provides timely notification of the community should it be determined that a threat to public safety exists. Additionally, the notification allows for the college to maintain accurate statistics and records in order to report incidents of sexual assault and harassment as required by law. If you are a student or an employee who has been sexually assaulted by another student or college community member and is considering using the campus conduct system, we encourage you to discuss the matter with the College’s Title IX Coordinator. This provides you with the opportunity to review campus conduct procedures, but does not obligate you to pursue action. Mount Ida College will assist victims in every way possible to restore their sense of empowerment and personal safety. This includes, at a minimum, arranging for changes in class schedules and living situations subsequent to an alleged sexual assault, to the extent that they are reasonably available. Additionally, college representatives will guide the victim through the available options and support the victim in their decision.
In accordance with the requirements of the Student Right-To-Know and Campus Security Act, in any campus conduct case alleging some form of sexual assault, the accuser and the accused are entitled to the same opportunity to have others present during disciplinary proceedings, and both will be informed of the outcome.
Students and employees are reminded that this is not something they have to go through alone, and resources are available for survivors throughout the process.
Title IX Reporting & Contact Information
Any member of the Mount Ida College campus community who believes they have been subjected to sexual or gender-based discrimination, harassment or misconduct is encouraged to formally report these incidents to the College’s Title IX Coordinator. The college takes these incidents seriously and will investigate these matters promptly and thoroughly.
In addition, any college employee (i.e., faculty or staff) informed of an allegation of sexual or gender-based discrimination, harassment or misconduct involving students or other members of the college community is expected to file a report with the College’s Title IX Coordinator. Certain employees who serve in privileged professional capacities and who are obligated by law to keep information confidential (i.e., counselors, health professionals) are exempt from this expectation.
The College’s Title IX Coordinator is obligated to act on any report of alleged sexual or gender-based discrimination, harassment or misconduct. While the Title IX Coordinator will be discreet during an investigation and will work to maintain a victim’s privacy, he/she cannot offer confidentiality in an investigation.
