The Mount Ida College Police Department Welcomes You
The safety and security of the Mount Ida College campus is our top priority. In order to provide the best services to our students, staff, and faculty, Mount Ida College and Lasell College have collaborated to provide a combined police department to serve both campuses. While being supervised by a single chief, each campus has its own force of officers and supervisors.

Around the Clock
The Mount Ida College Police Department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Our officers patrol the campus grounds, respond to incidents as they arise and participate in proactive efforts to educate the community in order to reduce opportunities for crime. We take great pride that our hometown of Newton, Massachusetts has been featured as one of the top 10 safest cities in the United States throughout the past decade.

A Student Resource
The College Police Department enjoys working with the Mount Ida students as a resource. Those who wish to pursue a career in criminal justice are welcome to stop by the Police Department at any time to meet with the officers and discuss this career path. If you have questions about services provided by the Mount Ida College Police Department, please contact the Chief of Police at campuspolice@mountida.edu.

Mount Ida College Police officers receive their police authority from Chapter 22C Section 63 of the Massachusetts General Laws, and all officers are sworn Deputy Sheriffs in Middlesex County. They are graduates of state-certified police academies that are conducted by either the Massachusetts State Police or the Municipal Police Training Council. In addition, officers are required to attend a minimum of 40 hours of annual in-service training, along with annual firearms recertification, to ensure they remain updated on all aspects of law enforcement.

The department has police authority to apprehend and prosecute any individual involved in illegal acts on-campus and in areas immediately adjacent to the campus. Our officers attend specialized training programs that enhance the department’s ability to deliver programs and investigate incidents effectively. In addition to pursuing criminal complaints, the Mount Ida Police Department may also refer an individual to the college judicial system for minor offenses or violations of college rules and regulations. The Mount Ida College Police work closely with the Newton Police Department and share criminal investigation resources when necessary.

All members of the Mount Ida College Police are certified as emergency first responders, which includes training in first aid, healthcare provider level CPR and the use of AED (automated external defibrillators).

The department is a member of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Officers, the Northeast Colleges and University Security Association and the Massachusetts Association of College Law Enforcement Administrators. Membership in these organizations allows the department to remain up-to-date in campus crime trends and provides officers and administrators with valuable information on issues occurring on local campuses.
