In this media-intense and media savvy world, the need for writers trained to tell the story in a way that is not only accurate, but captivating, continues to grow.

In the Professional Writing bachelor’s degree program, students will work closely with faculty who are experienced professionals to learn the art of writing that will empower them for careers in such fields as publishing, business, science, government, journalism, law and with non-profit organizations.

Students seeking a degree in Professional Writing, should also avail themselves of the option for a Double Major.

Well-suited combinations for a double major are: Pre-law: Law & Society, Business, Biology and Fashion Industry Marketing and Management.

The curriculum in the Professional Writing program combines a strong background in humanities-based studies with communications courses. Students will hone their rhetorical skills, while learning how to develop and apply advanced writing skills.

Professional Writing majors will develop advanced-level abilities to communicate in many forms to varied audiences. Students apply marketable communications skills such as editing, writing and all forms of digital media and learn how to manage professional writing projects from concept to delivery.

Additionally, students explore what makes communication effective in professional fields such as business, advertising, journalism and the media and will learn to work effectively as a team member on complex writing projects.

Students will emerge with a professional portfolio that represents their skills, expertise and talent.

Our Professional Writing program features small classes led by attentive and engaged faculty with years of professional experience. Our program prepares students to work in a wide array of professional settings. Furthermore, we encourage the pursuit of a minor and/or coursework in fields such as science, business, or fashion to tailor your expertise. Our degree curriculum offers courses focused on areas such as advertising copy, business communication, journalism, media writing, and computer-aided publishing. Furthermore, we offer two semesters of internships to ensure that our students are fully prepared to enter the field.

The Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing requires 120 credits, broken down as follows:

  • 36 credits in Professional Writing core courses
  • 30 credits in required all college curriculum courses
  • 54 credits in open electives
