The Pre-Medical Concentration at Mount Ida College prepares students to pursue a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at another institution after finishing a biology degree.

One thing medical schools are looking for is a well-rounded student. It is therefore important to have a comprehensive balance of science courses, which will help you perform well on the
admissions exams. Additionally, the non-science courses will help sculpt you into a well-rounded, multi-faceted and compassionate person. Completion of the Pre-medical Concentration
at Mount Ida College prepares each student’s application to medical school to pursue a Doctorate of Medicine. Medical schools require the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) as part of the application, for which students need to rigorously study and prepare in order to provide the best chances of success.

The Pre-medical Concentration includes a curriculum that prepares students for application to a medical program while earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Through small classes, attentive professors, a collaborative learning environment and state-of-the-art laboratories, you will be adequately prepared to take the next step forward in your chosen career path.

Our Pre-medical Concentration emphasizes hands-on laboratory instruction and experimentation. As a private New England college with small class sizes, Mount Ida can provide plenty of lab time with personalized attention from faculty to help you master advanced material in a community-like atmosphere. It is highly recommended for Pre-medical students to volunteer or intern in the medical field in their first year to make them competitive for their specific field of interest. Additionally, students are encouraged to start attending pre-health
meetings and take leadership positions, volunteer for clinical research or internship experiences, shadow a physician in their subsequent years and plan to take the MCAT in the spring of their third year.

Students interested in the Pre-medical Concentration must have a minimum GPA of 3.50 after their first year of courses at Mount Ida in order to continue this concentration. A minimum grade of C- or higher is required for all program-specific required courses (courses with the designation of BI and SC) in this major. To be competitive in applying to a medical school, students need to maintain a high GPA of at least 3.60 and have a minimum MCAT score of 32.

  • 1 year of biology with lab
