Course description

Participants of this course will complete the four-hour educational requirement to practice as a Massachusetts Public Dental Hygienist in the state of Massachusetts. The course will cover the three required components set forth by the Board of Registration in Dentistry: infection control, risk management and medical emergency review.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the Public Health Dental Hygienist Practice rules and regulations
  • Discuss components of risk management which include HIPAA, informed consent, documentation, liability insurance and public health reportable diseases.
  • Discuss various signs, symptoms and treatment for various medical emergencies
  • Discuss methods to prepare and prevent medical emergencies
  • Discuss current infection control guidelines for portable equipment in a public health setting

Barbara Sheerin is a Professor of Dental Hygiene at Cape Cod Community College (CCC). She also  serves as the Freshmen Facilitator at CCC.  Prof. Sheerin meets the requirements to practice as a public health hygienist and is certified in local anesthesia in the state of Massachusetts. She has served as President of the Massachusetts’s Dental Hygienist Association and as a Student Advisor to American Dental Hygienists Association for many years.

A member of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene and a recipient of the Johnson and Johnson Excellence in Dental Hygiene award, Sheerin also has been awarded the Educator of the Year award from the Massachusetts Dental Society and the Constituent Hygienist of the Year from the Massachusetts Dental Hygiene Association. She also was the recipient of the 2011 Massachusetts Dental Society Hygienist of the Year.
