Dean, School of Business
An exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurially minded candidate looking to bring their proven track record of strategic leadership and collaboration to create and grow strong programs. This position joins an energetic team of new Deans driven to build collaborative programs to move the college forward. The Dean will have teaching experience in at least one field represented among the academic departments within the School while also having familiarity with the disciplines within the school: Business Administration, Sport Management, and the MS in Management. The Dean should possess strong leadership ability and excellent management skills, demonstrated intellectual achievement, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, entrepreneurial ambition, collaborative and creative energy and a passion to further the College’s mission of career-relevant professional preparation through existing and new programs
The ideal candidate administers all School programs, departments, personnel, budget and facilities in accordance with the College’s strategies, policies and procedures.
This is a full time, 12-month position reporting directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2014.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Leadership of School and Academic Programs
Create a cohesive and unified business school and program portfolio that strongly differentiates Mount Ida College.
- Ensure the excellence of current programs
- Lead the faculty and college in identifying and implementing new programs
- Monitor and develop strategies to improve program enrollment, student advising, and retention and graduation rates
- Promote high academic standards and recognition of faculty and student scholarly accomplishments
- Foster a collegial environment conducive to open discourse among faculty of diverse strengths and perspectives
2. Management of Programs, Faculty and Staff
Fulfill school administrative roles and responsibilities, including oversight for the quality and effectiveness of the academic programs and faculty within the School, teaching assignments, curriculum review and development, and student advising
- Develop and manage school and program budgets for maximum efficiency and effectiveness
- Oversee program analysis and revisions, curriculum development and new program initiatives to improve outcomes and grow school enrollment
- Ensure excellence in faculty and staff recruitment, selection, and supervision in coordination with Program Directors, Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Executive Director of Human Resources
- Oversee ongoing performance management and formal evaluations of faculty and staff to ensure quality of outcomes and accountability consistent with the College’s goals and policies
3. Leadership and Oversight of Quality and Outcomes Assessment Programs
- Assure program and curriculum excellence through assessment of student learning, academic program reviews, and incorporation of technology into the curriculum
- Ensure compliance with all requirements of external accrediting bodies for programs within the School
- Collaborate with faculty in the development of ongoing course, program and school level assessment initiatives
- Provide annual reports and plans for programs within School and School overall
- Maintain and oversee a schedule and submission to the VPAA of 5-Year program Reviews for all programs in School.
4. College and Community Collaboration
- Develop strong partnerships with civic groups, industry and others to strengthen ties with the community and enhance the college, school and programs
- Seek strategic relationships that can enhance the mission, academic capacity and fiscal sustainability of the school and college
- Work with the Development Office to identify and secure public and private grants, scholarships and other resources to advance the school and College.
- Collaborate with Deans of other schools and others on campus to increase student and faculty satisfaction and engagement
- Based on the needs of the college may teach up to two courses per year in a program within the school or College in order to stay current with the needs of students and faculty at the College.
- It is the nature of this position that a combination of academic preparation, business, and academic related work experience is required. While an earned doctorate and related experience is desirable, individuals with an MBA and extensive business and academic work experience will be given full consideration.
- A minimum of 8 to 10 years’ combined business and academic experience is required, however a minimum of 3-4 years of the required experience must be in higher education managing academic programs and faculty.
- Strategic leadership ability combined with a successful record of academic administrative leadership and experience at the department level or above, including management of fiscal and personnel resources, academic program evaluation and review, strategic planning, and programs for student advisement, recruitment and retention are required;
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of providing leadership and direction in an academic and/or non-academic setting required
- Demonstrated commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of students and faculty members in the context of the College’s goals;
- Ability to develop and sustain private and public business and organization relationships
- Ability to work with the faculty to establish programming and curriculum opportunities reflecting current and future business needs.
- Intellectual accomplishment and a record of excellence in teaching, scholarship and service
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to faculty governance, positive personnel development, transparent consultative processes and consensus building;
- Successful experience collaborating with faculty and administrators from other disciplines and schools;
- Expressed commitment to working with an ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse campus and community and sensitivity to the needs of all students;
- Experience supporting community engagement and/or service learning;
- Demonstrated understanding of the value of and support for the effective use of technology in instruction, research and administration;
- Facility with Learning Management Systems and office productivity technologies and applications;
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
For School of Business:
- Leads the departments of Business Administration, Sport Management, and the MS in Management.
