Keeping Commencement Safe

Commencement Safety & Inclement Weather

Refer to the policies regarding safety and security, and how the College will respond to inclement weather.

Safety and Security

The safety and security of our graduates and guests is paramount.  On the day of Commencement various announcements will be broadcast and printed via public address, electronic signage as well as printed in the Commencement Program.  Please read all announcements carefully and follow instructions from Mount Ida College Police and Commencement Volunteers.

Please be aware in advance that in order to maintain safe evacuation routes under the ceremonial tent, absolutely no blocking of the aisles will be permitted.  It is for that reason that we ask you to respect the instructions of our Commencement volunteers and Police Department, and please do not block aisles and exits.

Inclement Weather

In the event of rain, Commencement exercises may still continue outdoors in the Commencement Tent. Graduates and guests are encouraged to bring their own rain gear.

If severe weather is likely — including thunderstorms with lightning, high winds, heavy or prolonged rain or risk of tornados as forecasted by the National Weather Service —Commencement may be delayed or moved to another day.  Advance notice will be posted if the day or time of the ceremony will change.

In the event of inclement weather, why can’t the ceremony be moved indoors?

Commencement attendance is anticipated to be nearly 1500. Other than the outdoor Commencement Tent, we do not have a facility to accommodate this many people.

The announcement will be posted using the following methods:

  • On Twitter and the Mount Ida College website
  • On the MiCampus Commencement Website
  • On the cell phones of students who signed up to receive alert notifications
