Mount Ida to Honor Alumni During Fall Fest

On Friday, September 22, Mount Ida will kick-off Fall Fest 2017 with its annual Alumni Awards Reception. Mount Ida alumni are invited to this annual celebration at the College to recognize the achievements and contributions of their fellow alums. This year, the College is honoring a varied and exciting group of alumni.

Distinguished Alumni Awards
Mount Ida will recognize two graduates with Distinguished Alumni awards on Friday night: Edith J. Green ’52 and Phillip J. Matthews ’08.

Edith J. Green graduated in 1952 when Mount Ida was a junior college, and went out to earn her bachelor’s degree from Boston University. Ms. Green worked in interior design initially, but went on to find her voice and passion as an artist using such mediums as acrylic paint and paper. Ms. Green’s artwork has exhibited in multiple places including the Mashpee Public Library and Massachusetts General Hospital. She’s also received recognition for her art, including first prize at the 2015 Cape Cod Art Association Exhibit.

Phillip J. Matthews ‘08 will also be recognized as a Distinguished Alum. Mr. Matthews, who is originally from Baltimore, MD, graduated from Mount Ida with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He went on to earn his master’s in education from Johns Hopkins University, and is currently working toward his second master’s degree in physical education at the University of South Florida. Mr. Matthews currently lives in Maryland with his three children, and teaches at Barclay Elementary and Middle School. He also coaches junior varsity football at the high school from which he graduated, and holds a successful back-to-school drive for his hometown community each year. Mr. Matthews also founded and runs All Lives United, a summer camp and before- and after-school program for Maryland children.

Alumni Achievement Award
Nicole Dunn ’91 will receive the Alumni Achievement Award. Following graduation from Mount Ida with a degree in liberal arts, Ms. Dunn moved to Los Angeles, California. Concerned that there was a lack of accurate health information in wellness brands, Ms. Dunn created Dunn Pellier Media, a company whose aim is to help people live happier, healthier lives. In addition to her media company, Ms. Dunn has also worked as a TV producer on well known shows including The Weakest Link, Dr. Phil’s Decision House, and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Ms. Dunn lives on the West Coast with her husband and their dog.

Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
Mount Ida will induct two former College athletes into the Athletic Hall of Fame: Jeileen Alvarez ’12 and Timothy Hughes ’08.

Jeileen Rivera Alvarez ’12 came to Mount Ida from Springfield, MA, and grew into a strong player for the Mustang’s women’s basketball, cross country, and lacrosse teams. Ms. Alvarez graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology. She began her vet tech career at the Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital before moving to the VCA Northborough Animal Hospital, where she currently works. Ms. Alvarez also owns a martial arts studio with her husband in Northampton, where they teach Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In addition to teaching, Ms. Alvarez also competes in jiu-jitsu.

Timothy Hughes ’08 graduated from Mount Ida College with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. In addition to entering the film production field in Boston following graduation, Mr. Hughes also coached Mount Ida’s men’s and women’s volleyball teams – a passion he hopes to pursue again in the future. He currently lives in Columbus, Ohio, and in his spare time writes children’s books and moonlights as a stand-up comic.

While the Alumni Awards Reception is by invitation, keep your eye out throughout the weekend of Fall Fest for these impressive alumni – and be sure to say hello and congratulations when you see them! Learn more about Fall Fest here.
